Why the National Championship Is Called the Aketi Bowl

The Aketi Bowl is more than a championship title. It is a tribute to a man whose belief in sport went far beyond recreation.
The man behind the name
Arakunrin Oluwarotimi “Aketi” Akeredolu, SAN, CON, was the pioneer Board Chairman of the Nigerian American Football Association (NAFA). He was also a two-term Governor of Ondo State and a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association.
A believer in youth through sport
Long before flag football found its footing in Nigerian schools, Aketi understood the power of structured sport as a tool for discipline, opportunity and social mobility. He believed that young Nigerians deserved platforms that could channel their energy in productive and competitive ways.
Keeping the legacy alive
Naming the national championship after him is NAFA’s way of preserving that legacy. It recognises his role in laying the early administrative and strategic foundations of the federation.
Every edition of the Aketi Bowl carries that symbol forward: a celebration of excellence, competition, and the idea that when young people are given the right structure, they rise to meet it.
